Adding Legs to Furniture aka Franken-Furniture
As I have mentioned a few times {cough cough} while working on the Room Service Atlanta project I have been on a severe budget! While a majority of the items have been donated or were from my personal hoard collection, I couldn’t come up with a nightstand that was the right height, width, shape, depth, price… well anything. So I got really really creative. So much so that this project could have easily been a disaster. I thought it was worth the risk though…
I started with some Nesting Cube Tables I have had for years. They have been side tables, shelves & plant stands, but have never really suited any of the locations they have lived in & have always been a tad awkward. I have tried painting them, adding nailheads… nothing seemed to work in our space. Hence the reason they had been banished to our crawl space.

After taking inventory of the items I had left, the idea struck me to use the largest one as a nightstand. It was the right depth & width, the price was right… free, the only problem was, it was 7″ too short. Why not add legs?!?
I found these from Lowes.com & scooped them up.
As soon as they arrived I drilled four holes into the base of the largest table, added a little Gorilla Glue for added stability & painted my Franken Furniture to give it a consistent look.
My cube table had a solid base originally which helps to create a finished look. I was nervous it would look disjointed, but once it was all the same color I was really happy with the results.
One of my favorite elements of the table was that I left the nailhead trim I had started a year ago in. I decided to simply paint over it. It gave an almost hobnail effect which I am loving!
I can’t wait to get it in the space & style it up for real next to the bed!
The Paint I used was Rustoleum Professional Spray Primer & Rustoleum Professional in Safety Red.
Love this red!
Would you ever consider adding legs to existing piece of furniture? Or have you ever created any Franken-Furniture? I’d love to hear about it!
love this.
This turned out great!!!! I love the nailhead. Bravo!
LOVE this! Brilliant. It looks like it was always that way.
Love this so much, Kristin!! Your franken-furniture turned out so chic and pretty! π The color & styling is perfection!
It came out great! So nice when a furniture experiment exceeds your expectations π
Ummm…I would now!! Love this!
Wicked genius!
these look great. i love the out-of-the-box thinking. great inspiration!
Love it – nicely done.
For now, I'm living with bed lifters under my ikea loveseat legs to get it so people don't need an act of congress to get off the couch. Why, oh why, are couches so low? Even short people have bad knees.
I'll admit, the lines of couches don't look right when you start putting tall spindly legs on them… but as the baby boomers get older, they are going to want fashionable couches they can really use. Right?
thats such a smart idea!! Thanks!

Yay! I added cute feet to some cheap Wal-Mart bookcases. I also painted them. I was worried about the paint not holding up, but so far no problems at all. I <3 SPRAYPAINT!
I'm so in love with it all! And I would've never thought to spray paint over the nail trim. You made your life 10 times easier by leaving it and not trying to "fix" it and it turned out beautifully!
Absolutely LOVE safety red! Great job!
Wow, I love that red and the tables are fabulous!
Gorgeous!! xo Kristin
Great way to give old furniture new life. Love the legs but especially love the red paint added right over those nailheads…brilliant!
It turned out great! I just used safety red in my lay dry room. Id love for you to check it out! Houseofpemberley.blogspot.com
I just picked up a can of that safety red…hard to find in a regular spray (vs. the kind for drawing lines). I think I'm going to repaint a few of my things that are too tomatoey with it. And love your green chair set! I painted my mismatched kitchen chairs all one color…but can you believe I actually went white with them?!? now you've got me itched to repaint in a color!!
Such an amazing transformation! I love it. The red is absolute perfection. Hey quick question? I see you do a lot of awesome painted furnitre projects. I was wondering if you happen to have a source for the perfect mint spray paint. I aquired 6 bentwood dining chairs and Im trying to find the perfect mint to paint them. I prefer to spray them, but if youve worked with bentwood chairs before, Id love your input on whether I should spray them or brush them. Thanks so much.
Such good work! The finished piece looks wonderful. Customised furniture really is a popular addition to homes these days, it is a wonderful way give your home a personalised look.
Everything you do looks great! You are so talented with these makeovers. Love your style.
