How to Seal Chalkboard Art
A few months ago I made these chalkboard toy boxes for the littles. I fully expected the lettering to dissappear moments after taking this picture, but surprisingly they have stayed pretty much in tact. So much so that I have grown quite fond of them & wanted them to be permanent. Well who knew… all I needed was a can of hairspray! Just a quick few sprays & it is set. No more smudges. Just be prepared for the following…
- Your chalk design will fade when wet, but will come back vibrant once dry.
- Your house will smell like hairspray. (I hate hairspray! I think I was traumatized as a child… So much so that I have had the same can of hairspray since I met my husband 10 years ago. That is how often I use it.)

i am in love with the gallery wall
Good to know!! That's hilarious about the hairspray.. I use to hate it as a kid too!
I absolutely love the lamp! I would love to know where you got it!
Thanks JoAnna! I actually did it. It was originally a burgundy lamp that I painted white & I free handed the gold polka dots with a gold leaf pen.
Im so Excited for this tip thanks!!

Awesome tip girl! Gorgeous gallery. I love your work :).
who knew i might have to try it thanks for sharing
Where did you get the bookshelf? And the boxes?
Ikea for the shelf… it is discontinued now. & the boxes were originally wine crates we had on hand.
Does this just temporarily seal to make the design last longer and prevent smudges, or does it make the design permanent?
Well, I sealed these boxes a year ago & they have been played with daily. They still look exactly the same… I think if i were to scrub them with soap & water, the design would probably come off, they have held up to a two year old for a year. (Best answer I could provide! lol)
I painted the kids wall with the chalkboard paint & would like to know do I have to do any thing to seal it before the kida can use it?
No. All you have to do is prime the wall with a layer of chalk. Easiest way to do this is take the chalk long ways & cover the entire wall. After its covered, erase it & you are good to go!
